Co-Managed IT Services — When It Makes Sense for DMV Businesses with an Internal IT Team

Co-managed IT is a partnership between your internal IT staff and an outside provider. Your team keeps doing what they do well — day-to-day support, institutional knowledge, being on-site — while the provider adds what one or two people can never cover alone: 24/7 monitoring, deep cybersecurity, compliance expertise, and backup when they're sick, on vacation, or buried. For DMV businesses with a small internal IT team, it is usually the most cost-effective upgrade available.
The problem co-managed IT solves
One IT person cannot be a help desk, a network engineer, a security analyst, and a compliance officer at the same time — and they cannot work around the clock. The result is a familiar pattern: tickets pile up, patches slip, security projects never start, and your best technical employee burns out or leaves, taking everything they know with them. Co-managed IT breaks that pattern without the disruption of replacing your team.
How the split typically works
Your team keeps: first-line user support, on-site presence, vendor relationships, business-specific applications
The provider adds: 24/7 monitoring and alerting, Tier 2/3 escalation, patch management at scale, EDR and security operations
Shared: documentation, projects like migrations and office moves, compliance work for HIPAA or CMMC
Coverage: the provider backfills vacations, sick days, and departures so IT never depends on one person's presence
Signs co-managed IT is right for your business
You have 1–3 internal IT staff and 25–150 employees. Your IT person is good but stretched thin. Security projects keep getting postponed. Cyber insurance renewals are asking for controls nobody has time to implement. You hold or want government contracts that require CMMC, or handle patient data under HIPAA. Or simply: everything breaks when your IT person takes a week off. Any two of those is enough reason to look at the model.
What it costs compared to hiring
A second senior IT hire in the DMV runs $90K–$140K plus benefits — and still only works 40 hours a week in one skill set. Co-managed IT delivers a whole bench of specialists plus around-the-clock monitoring for a predictable monthly fee that is typically a fraction of one salary. The math is rarely close.
How DCI TECH USA runs co-managed partnerships
We are based in Ashburn, Virginia and partner with internal IT teams across Washington DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia. Your team gets access to our monitoring platform, our documentation, and our engineers — we work as an extension of your department, not a replacement for it. Co-managed arrangements run on our standard per-user plans with the responsibilities split documented up front, so there is never confusion about who owns what. Call (240) 503-1611 or email info@dcitech.us to map out what the split would look like for your team.
Frequently asked questions
Will co-managed IT replace my IT person?
No — that is the whole point of the model. Your IT person usually becomes more valuable and less burned out, because they shed the 2 AM alerts and the specialist work they were never equipped for, and focus on what only they can do.
Who do employees call when something breaks?
Whatever you decide — that is defined in the responsibility split. Most clients keep internal IT as the first call and escalate to us; some route everything through our help desk and free their internal person for projects. Both work.
How is this different from fully outsourced managed IT?
Fully outsourced means the provider is your IT department. Co-managed means the provider works alongside the one you already have. Businesses often move between the two as they grow — the right answer depends on headcount, complexity, and compliance load.
